April 1, 2026, marked a significant milestone for the social care sector in Scotland. Following a commitment from the Scottish Government, the minimum pay for adult social care workers has officially risen. This change reflects the vital role care professionals play in our communities and ensures that pay rates stay ahead of rising living costs.
While Care Support Scotland will be sharing specific updates regarding our own wage structures in the near future, everyone in the sector needs to understand exactly what these national changes mean for them.
A New National Floor
The most important figure to remember is £13.45 per hour. As of the start of April, this is the new minimum pay for adult social care workers in Scotland. This rate is the specific “Real Living Wage” floor for the sector, which places it significantly higher than the standard UK National Living Wage of £12.71.
In a city like Edinburgh, where the cost of living can be high, this difference is substantial. It ensures that those who dedicate their careers to supporting others are themselves supported with a wage that covers the essentials and provides a more comfortable monthly budget.
Fair Pay Regardless of Age
One of the most positive aspects of this change is the removal of age-related pay bands. In many other industries, younger workers, such as those under 21 or 23, are often paid at a lower “youth rate”.
In the Scottish care sector, this is not the case. The £13.45 rate applies to everyone performing the role, regardless of their age. This means that if you have just left college at 18, you will receive the same professional rate as a colleague with years of experience.
Legal Protection and Backdated Pay
Implementing these changes across every council and care provider takes time. However, the law is very clear on how this transition must work. Any pay increase is legally protected and must be backdated to April 1st, even if the administrative paperwork takes a few weeks to catch up.
This means you can work with confidence, knowing that you will receive every penny you have earned from the official start date of the new rate. You are legally entitled to this backdated amount, ensuring that no worker is left behind by administrative delays.
Looking Ahead
At Care Support Scotland, we are pleased to see these steps being taken to value the social care profession. We are currently working through the details of our own wage updates and will provide more information to our team and prospective applicants as soon as possible.
If you are considering a career in care, there has never been a better time to join a sector that is increasingly recognised for its professional and social value. Take a look at our current job listings or get in touch to find out more.
